Elementary Education

Elementary education students have the opportunity to shape children’s attitudes toward learning and develop habits of lifelong learning. In addition to mastering content, you will learn skills for providing a solid foundation in basic academic skills, social and character development, and decision making.

You will build your degree from the basics of the Common Experience core courses and then concentrate on the subject in which you want to specialize. You will learn teaching methods, observe classrooms in action, and gain teaching experience. All graduates prepare a portfolio that demonstrates their knowledge, skills and ability to teach their chosen subject.

We highly recommend that prospective teachers choose the education major early in their college career so that there is enough time to meet all of the requirements for the education major as well as certification in their field.

With a C-SC degree in elementary education you will be certified to teach grades 1-6. To receive teacher certification, students must earn at least a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 in their certification area. A grade of 'C' or better is required for all professional education courses. Student teaching is required.
