Culver-Stockton to host instructor’s book signing
Thursday, March 18, 2010

CANTON, Mo. – Carol W. Nichols, Culver-Stockton College adjunct humanities instructor, has launched a new pressing of An Illuminated and Illustrated Manuscript of the Gospel of Thomas, her accurate reproduction of the original manuscript of the Gospel of Thomas. She will be holding a reception and book signing hosted by the C-SC Humanities Division and library staff on Thursday, March 25 at 4 p.m. in the Johann Memorial Library’s West Wing.

The printings of the 2006 manuscript were launched with a book signing at Great Debate Books in Quincy, Ill. on March 18. This event is historically significant because the last known copy of a hand-written manuscript of this Gospel was completed around 350 C.E. in Northern Egypt. When re-written by Nichols in the style of a medieval document, her effort became the first hand-written, artistic treatment of the Gospel in over 1,600 years.

The printed books include an informative introduction by Nichols and a foreword by Dr. Marvin Meyer, one of the most prominent Early Christian studies scholars and Coptic translators found in the world today. The books are hard bound, cloth-covered, and stitched.

At the reception and signing at Culver-Stockton, she will also have the 2006 manuscript from which the other copies were created on display for the public. Any profits from this venture will fund other manuscripts and printings as well as a newly formed not-for-profit organization.
