Culver-Stockton Extreme Dome Makeover Recipients Announced
Monday, August 09, 2010

CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College has selected four families from the city of Canton as recipients of the Extreme Dome Makeover (EDM) it is sponsoring on August 21. Over the past three months, the Canton community was asked to nominate deserving individuals who have demonstrated qualities of good faith and human spirit despite personal limitations or hardships. After careful consideration, recipients of this year’s EDM are Phillip and Loxi Barr, Colleen Feldkamp, Carl and Karen LaSala, and Allen and Adrian Searson.

The Barr’s were nominated for their dedication to a variety of Canton initiatives including the local Girl Scouts, clothing drives, and overcoming personal/family challenges. Over the years their auxiliary home has come into disrepair and is in need of window re-glazing and repainting.

The LaSala’s are small business owners in downtown Canton. Both are very active in their church, and known for their support of Boy Scout and 4-H endeavors. The LaSala’s home is also in need of repainting, and bids they had received were beyond their financial means.

The Feldkamp home will round out the trio of homes needing repainted. After 14 years the paint has deteriorated significantly. Known for her long-time commitment to community safety initiatives, Colleen Feldkamp has long cared for the sick and injured. Ironically, it is her own physical limitations that prevent her from painting her home.

The Searson’s, on the other hand, are a healthy young couple just looking to start off on a good foot. Allen is a nine year veteran of the United States Air Force, and currently is studying communications at C-SC. The Searsons have spent most of their savings renovating the interior of their 100 year old home. The EDM team will be helping out with the curb appeal and landscaping the front of their home.

With nearly 300 volunteers projected, additional projects will take place simultaneously apart from the four projects listed above, including collaboration with the Canton Betterment Committee, who is re-roofing the Lincoln School House. EDM team members will also be building a handicap ramp, doing waste removal, and yard work for other homes in the community.

“Culver-Stockton is excited to not only make a difference in the lives of the four deserving families, but also play a role in inspiring the Canton community to come together for a great cause,” said organizer Jay Hoffman. “The Extreme Dome Makeover project would not be possible without hard work of many volunteers and the generous donations from Canton and Quincy (Ill.) residents and businesses.”
