Culver-Stockton College students visit Missouri Supreme Court
Friday, September 10, 2010

CANTON, Mo. – A group of Culver-Stockton students recently had the chance to see the judicial process in motion during a trip to the Missouri Supreme Court. C-SC’s “Judicial Process” and “Trial Advocacy” classes visited the Missouri Supreme Court in Jefferson City, Mo., on Sept. 7. The students were invited by Judge Mary Russell, who visited Culver-Stockton last spring for the dedication of the mock trial courtroom in Johann Memorial Library.

During the visit students heard a case that was brought before the Missouri Supreme Court. The opportunity allowed students to experience, in a real situation, the tone of a courtroom as attorneys argued their case and judges presented questions. Students also enjoyed a question and answer session with Judge Russell, toured the courthouse and Judge Russell’s chambers and had the opportunity to sit on the bench for a photo.

“Justice Russell is an inspiration,” said Judy Abbott, senior lecturer of criminal justice/legal studies. “Her wit and charm made us all feel at ease and truly at home in the Missouri Supreme Court. This was truly a quintessential hands-on learning moment for us.”

While in Jefferson City, the class also toured the State Capitol Building including the House chamber, where laws are written.

This was the first time the classes have visited the Missouri Supreme Court, but Abbott says she would like to make the trip an annual event.
