CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College will host the work of Tyler Hennings , a painter, Thursday, Nov. 4 through Friday, Dec. 17, in the Mabee Art Gallery, located in the Herrick Foundation Center on the C-SC campus. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m., with a gallery talk beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Hennings earned his bachelor of fine arts from Western Illinois University, and his master of fine arts from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill. He currently serves as an assistant professor at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Ill. He is also a member of the education department studio art advisory committee at the Figge Art Museum, Davenport, Iowa, serves as gallery director for the Len G. Everett Gallery at Monmouth College, and is a member of the Monmouth College student affairs committee.
Hennings has taken part in numerous solo and juried exhibitions, and has received several awards and honors over the past several years.
“My paintings are about the act of looking, the process of painting, and the foundations of art. It is my goal to create work from carefully observed reality with an abstract sensibility; to create a dialogue between representation and abstraction, which I do not see as mutually exclusive ways of working. I make forceful, confidant marks that describe my subject, and that also document my emotional and painterly reaction to that subject. I choose ubiquitous objects that have a subtle and unassuming sense of humor or personal warmth, and when painted in my assertive style, allow me to create non-literal meaning in my work,” said Henning in his artist statement.
