C-SC Mock Trial brings home high honors from tournament
Tuesday, October 26, 2010

CANTON, Mo. – The Culver-Stockton Mock Trial team is celebrating its success after placing fourth in Quincy University’s Riverside Classic Tournament. The tournament, held Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Adams County Courthouse, was the C-SC Mock Trial team’s first of the academic year. The tournament featured 16 teams from nine different schools located across the country, including University of Kansas, University of Northern Alabama, Illinois State University and St. Louis University. Culver-Stockton finished the tournament with a record of three wins and one loss after defeating University of Northern Alabama twice and splitting the second round against Illinois State University.

“Our students have worked very hard this semester getting ready for our first tournament,” said Judy Abbott, senior lecturer in criminal justice and law. “Much of the recognition should go to both team captains, Jessica Deters and Carrie Phillips. Those two returning mockers have provided the team with leadership, structure and organizational skills they have needed. Their tournament experience from previous years has allowed our team to have an extremely strong start this year. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to both of them for the numerous hours they have spent committed to a strong showing for our new program,” added Abbott.

Culver-Stockton also brought home three individual awards, outstanding witness, Dylan Gauldin, freshman criminal justice major; outstanding attorney and outstanding witness, Karrie Guthrie, senior criminal justice major.

The purpose of Mock Trial at the undergraduate level is to have students read and analyze a set of facts, prepare their case for the courtroom and develop basic litigation skills in the process.
