C-SC faculty member honored for excellence in teaching
Tuesday, April 19, 2011

CANTON, Mo. – James Cosgrove, Culver-Stockton College professor of business administration was the recipient of the inaugural Excellence in Teaching award from the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). Cosgrove received the award during the IACBE annual meeting held March 30 – April 1 in Las Vegas, Nev. Cosgrove was nominated for the award by C-SC Business Program Chair and Professor of Accounting Dr. Dell Ann Janney, and was selected for the award based on an evaluation of several areas, including curriculum and teaching philosophy, among others.
“I am extremely honored to receive this award,” said Cosgrove. “The member schools of IACBE represent the best teaching in collegiate business programs, and to be recognized by those schools is humbling. I would like to express gratitude to Dr. Janney, who nominated me, and to Culver-Stockton College for giving me the opportunity to utilize an innovative curriculum in my classroom. It is my belief that Culver-Stockton’s 12/3 academic calendar and the opportunities it allows for hands-on teaching truly helped set me apart from the many other highly qualified nominees. We’re very proud to have the IACBE accreditation at Culver-Stockton College, and this award is further proof of the good work being done by the entire business division,” Cosgrove continued.
Cosgrove joined the Culver-Stockton Business Division in 1981. He earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from the University of Notre Dame, his Bachelor of Arts in religion and philosophy from Culver-Stockton College and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Illinois College of Law. He practiced law for 10 years prior to joining the faculty at C-SC.
Dr. Susan Deege, C-SC senior lecturer in business also attended the meeting, and worked with Cogrove to present a session titled “Innovations in Curriculum,” which discussed the impetus for change in the curriculum at Culver-Stockton. The presentation focused on the process undertaken for implementing rapid change within an academic setting. The presentation also included discussion of Culver-Stockton’s 12/3 academic calendar and the unique opportunities that it provides students.
Deege joined the C-SC Business Division in 2009. She holds a Bachelor of Science in advertising, graduating with honors from the University of Illinois. Graduate degrees include a master’s in advertising/marketing from Northwestern University, a master’s in management from National-Louis University, and a doctorate in workforce education and development from Southern Illinois University. Prior to joining C-SC, she served as the director for career and advising services at John Wood Community College for eight years.
The Culver-Stockton College Business Program is accredited by the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education (IACBE). The IACBE is the premier professional accrediting body for business schools with an emphasis on student-centered learning. The purpose of the IACBE is to advance the academic quality of business education throughout the world.
