C-SC student awarded at national speaking competition
Tuesday, July 26, 2011

CANTON, Mo. – Culver-Stockton College senior Kelsey Vaughn was recently honored during the Phi Beta Lambda national competition. Vaughn ranked fifth nationally in the public speaking competition at the PBL Awards of Excellence held June 26. Vaughn is a native of Lewistown, Ill., and majors in speech communication at C-SC.

PBL State Competition performances determine eligibility for the national competition. Vaughn, who place third in the state competition, expressed gratitude to her fellow students and C-SC faculty members for their support. “I am amazingly blessed to have been given the opportunity to go to the Institute for Leaders and National Leadership Conference with my teammates Abi and Cathy. Through competitive events, leadership workshops and networking we were able to meet and learn from aspiring business leaders all over the country, as well as represent Culver-Stockton at the national level. Our adviser Jeanne Johnson pushed us to do our best throughout the school year, and it really paid off. This is an experience that will forever shape me as an individual leader and as a team player. I would have never had this fantastic opportunity without the support of the business and communication faculty and the gracious alumni of Culver-Stockton,” said Vaughn.

Additionally, C-SC students Abiade Adeleye, C-SC junior finance and accountancy major from Gowon Estate, and Catherine Carmean, senior business major from Hannibal, Mo., also competed at the national competition. During the Missouri state competition, Adeleye placed first in the state in the Accounting Principles competition and Carmean placed third in Client Services.

“I’m very proud of our students’ accomplishments. Kelsey’s five minute speech, ‘Movieing,’ on leadership and motivation was unique, with her utilization of movie titles and mention of Dr. Dell Ann Janney, C-SC Business Division Chairperson,” said Jeanne Johnson, C-SC assistant professor of management information systems and PBL adviser.

The award was part of a comprehensive national competitive events program sponsored by FBLA-PBL that recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business and career-related areas. For many students, the competitive events are the capstone activity of their academic careers. In addition to the competitions, students immersed themselves in educational workshops, visited an information-packed exhibit hall and attended motivational keynotes on a broad range of business topics.
