Culver-Stockton Mock Trial sweeps opening scrimmage
Tuesday, October 11, 2011
CANTON, Mo. – In its first match of the 2011-12 school year, Culver-Stockton College’s Mock Trial team swept two rounds of competition by a unanimous ruling from judges.
Members of Culver-Stockton’s Mock Trial team participated in a two round scrimmage against the Quincy University Mock Trial team on Sunday, Oct. 9. The scrimmage was held as QU unveiled its new mock trial courtroom, with Dr. Brian Borlas, Quincy University professor of political science and Judy Abbott, Culver-Stockton senior lecturer in criminal justice and law serving as judges.
Mock Trial is a simulated trial between two teams. The teams of 6-8 students represent either the prosecution in a criminal case (plaintiff, in a civil case) or the defense. The simulated trials are judged by real-life judges, attorneys and law students. The purpose of Mock Trial at the undergraduate level is to have students read and analyze a set of facts, prepare their case for the courtroom and develop basic litigation skills in the process.
The C-SC Mock Trial team will next compete in the Riverside Classic on Oct. 22. For more information on C-SC’s Mock Trial program visit www.culver.edu/humanities/trial.
