Celebrate the season with Culver-Stockton’s annual Christmas Concert
Wednesday, November 30, 2011
CANTON, Mo. -- Christmastide lessons and carols form the centerpiece of the Culver-Stockton College Christmas Concert on Thursday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center in Canton, Mo. Beginning with brass fanfares and Gregorian chant processional, the biblical readings and singing that characterize the traditional festal celebration will be enriched with readings from great poets such as Hildegard of Bingen, John Donne and W.H. Auden read by choristers, faculty, staff and administration. In addition to traditional carols, the college’s Concert Choir and Collegiate Choir will sing works including 21st century composer Paul Manz’ “E’en So, Lord Jesus, Quickly Come” and a chorus from Felix Mendelssohn’s “St. Paul.”
The Culver-Stockton College Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the chamber brass ensemble will accompany much of the singing and provide fanfares as well as their own musical offerings. A highlight of the festival will be the finale from Arthur Honneger’s “King David,” with choirs, organ and chamber wind ensemble. The brass ensemble and organ will also provide a finale fanfare and accompany the choirs and audience in “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”
Following the formal concert, the Culver-Stockton Jazz Ensemble invites the audience to the Mabee Little Theatre (Black Box) for holiday refreshments and dancing. The Christmas Concert is part of the C-SC Division of Fine Arts’ offerings to the college’s Academic and Cultural Affairs programming and the public is welcome free of charge.
