Black Repertoire Theatre to perform on C-SC campus
Monday, January 23, 2012
CANTON, Mo. – The Black Repertoire Theatre, the largest, professional African-American theatre company in the nation and the largest African-American performing arts organization in Missouri, will stage a theatre production on the campus of Culver-Stockton College Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.
The production, Stump of the Terebinth: A play in one-act by Kwame Dawes, explores how one HIV-positive person infected and wiped out nearly an entire community, leaving just one survivor. That survivor, in turn, goes on to help others avoid the same fate by sharing the community’s story. The Culver-Stockton College performance of Stump of the Terebinth is sponsored by the C-SC Parent Association, and is presented with financial support from the Willie Mae Ford Smith Charitable trust.
Each year, The Black Repertoire Theatre Touring Company performs more than 150 shows for schools, community centers, corporations, churches and other organizations in St. Louis and throughout the Midwest region. Touring shows complement academic curriculum by illustrating history, teaching literature, and reinforcing morals.
Stump of the Terebinth is offered as part of Culver-Stockton College’s Academic and Culture Events program, which is intended to broaden students’ academic pursuits, introduce current issues, serve as a forum for ethical concerns, offer cultural breadth and refinement, and stimulate new directions and perspectives for thought.
All performance will be held in the Alexander Campbell Auditorium inside the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center on the campus of Culver-Stockton College. This event is free and open to the public, a free will offering will be accepted.
