Pulitzer Prize winner headlines Culver-Stockton’s Kraus Lecture
Tuesday, March 13, 2012

CANTON, Mo. – Pulitzer Prize winner and former Culver-Stockton College student Mark Konkol will be the featured speaker Wednesday, March 28 during the annual Kraus Lecture.
Mark Konkol is a reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times and recipient of the Pulitzer Prize. Konkol and fellow Chicago Sun-Times journalists Frank Main and John Kim received the highest honor bestowed upon journalists for their work on a three-part series focused on a deadly, April 2008 weekend in Chicago. The series, published in July 2010, investigated the culture of fear, street code and legal red tape that complicated the police investigation into, what remains, one of the deadliest single weekends in Chicago’s recent history.

Konkol attended Culver-Stockton College from 1991-1993. He was a member of a Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity member and a former Wildcat football player.
The Kraus Lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. inside Merillat Recital Hall inside the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center on the campus of Culver-Stockton College. This event is free and open to the public.

The Kraus Lecture was established by Joe W. Kraus in memory of his wife, Kathryn Elizabeth (Betsy) Curtright Kraus. Joe Kraus earned an undergraduate degree in English from C-SC in 1938 and an undergraduate degree in library science in 1939. Betsy Kraus attended C-SC from 1935-1937.

The Kraus Lecture corresponds with Culver-Stockton’s annual Young Writers’ Conference, which will be also to be held on Wednesday, March 28. The Young Writers’ Conference invites area high school students to take part in writing workshops and competitions, as well as have their worked critiqued. In addition to serving as the Kraus Lecture featured speaker, Konkol will host one of many conference workshops.

For more information on the Kraus Lecture or the Young Writers’ Conference contact the C-SC Admission Office at (800) 537-1883.
