REULING PRIZE The 2012 Walter S. Reuling Prize for Innovation in Student Learning was presented to Chad DeWaard, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science. DeWaard joined the Culver-Stockton faculty in August 2010 and has demonstrated a notable determination for utilizing non-traditional teaching approaches. The Reuling Prize, a cash award, goes to a faculty member selected by his or her peers. In his nomination, DeWaard is praised as being “a model of experiential teaching.” In his effort to expose the C-SC community to the wider world, DeWaard frequently brings influential guest speakers to campus, regularly organizing simulation events. Before joining the C-SC faculty, DeWaard served on the faculties of Central Texas College-U.S. Navy, Southern Illinois University, Bradley University, the University of Tennessee and, most recently, Loras College. He earned his bachelor’s degree in arts and master’s degree in arts from University of Northern Iowa, and his doctorate of philosophy from Southern Illinois University. HELSABECK PRIZE Judith Abbott, J.D., received the 2012 Helsabeck Prize for Excellence in Teaching, a cash award given annually to a faculty member selected from student and faculty nominations. Abbott currently serves as senior lecturer in criminal justice, pre-law student advisor and coach of the Culver-Stockton Mock Trial team. In her nominations, Abbott was noted as “uncompromising in her determination to push students to achieve more.” Abbott also received a number of nominations from C-SC alumni, many of whom are now attending law school. In one such nomination, Abbott was cited as being a continued source of academic and personal support. “I am currently a second year law student at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Words cannot describe how well Judy prepped me for law school. Her influence has impacted me beyond words. Without Judy in my life, I would not have been able to reach the pinnacles that I have been able to reach. I still talk to her at least two to three times per week. She is the reason why I am successful today. “ Abbott graduated summa cum laude from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and pre-law. She earned a juris doctorate from the University of Iowa. Prior to joining the faculty of Culver-Stockton College, she served as a juvenile and domestic violence prosecutor in Adams County, Ill., and as a juvenile prosecutor in Sangamon County, Ill.
