Check out the Fine Arts at C-SC

Driven by its commitment to help students become absorbed in the diversity that fine arts can instill in their lives, Culver-Stockton offers a variety of cultural events "right in your own backyard," according to Thomas Polett, associate professor of music and chairperson of the fine arts division.

Between C-SC students' performances and ACE programming, which brings professional groups to campus, there are many opportunities for students to come out and witness amazing abilities, he added.

"Students are surprised of all the talent demonstrated by their peers," said Polett.

Performances are a real eye opener for students who do not typically attend fine arts events.

All students must fulfill the ACE credit requirement before graduation. Students coming in as freshman are required to have 28 credits. Transfer students are prorated.

"By attending these events, students build an appreciation for different traditions," added Polett.

The high quality of C-SC student productions is well-known, Polett said. For example, the American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) has nominated three students for their recent work in the C-SC production of William Inge's "Bus Stop." The ACTF is a national theatre program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide who compete annually for scholarships at the regional level and who can advance to the national competition.

There are several upcoming fine arts events being held at Culver-Stockton. The Jazz Ensemble Concert will be Friday, November 2, directed by Polett. Mabee Art Gallery currently features an exhibit by James Zimmerman, Culver-Stockton adjunct faculty member, which will be up until early November. The Opera Workshop 'Trial by Jury' presented by Gilbert and Sullivan will take place October 18-19, directed by Carol Mathieson.

Robert Costanzo to appear in
annual guest artist production

Movie and television actor Robert Costanzo will appear in "Moon Over Buffalo," Culver-Stockton's annual guest artist production, scheduled for C-SC Family Weekend. Productions are Nov. 1, 3, and 4. Written by Ken Ludwig, this comedy is set in 1953 in Buffalo, N.Y., and tells the tale of two traveling actors, who are performing "Cyrano de Bergerac" in town, but who have their eyes set on Hollywood. Costanzo has appeared in hundreds of movies and TV shows.  His most recent performances include roles on "Boston Legal," "Gone," "The Sopranos," "Days of Our Lives," "Mafiosa," "CSI New York," and "Will and Grace." He has roles in two movies still to be released, "West of Brooklyn" and "The Big Shot-Caller." Tickets are $5 for C-SC faculty, staff, and students; public tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. Reservations are recommended. Contact the Fine Arts Office at 288-6346. Culver-Stockton's full schedule of theatre and music performances and art exhibits is available online in the "Fine Arts" section at www.culver.edu

              Wildcats shock #3 Graceland

Mahamat Ali Tchetchere                                                             Jake Kittrell

Celebrating its 20th season of existence, the Culver-Stockton College men's soccer team collected arguably its biggest victory in the program's history Tuesday afternoon at Ayers Field.

"To be able to play with and ultimately defeat a team of Graceland's stature says a lot about where our program is headed," said Wildcat coach Mark Thomas. " The kids did everything asked of them and they were rewarded with a victory."

The Wildcats got a goal from forward Mahamat Ali Tchetchere in the 25th minute, and then survived a late barrage of scoring chances by Graceland, to upset the third-ranked and defending NAIA national champions 1-0.

The game was scoreless with both teams stuck in the midfield when Tchetchere struck for the Wildcats.

Adam Klingele collected the ball and dribbled down the right side before sending a crossing pass into the penalty area. Kyle Hayward flicked with his head to the goal box where Tchetchere one-timed it past Graceland goalie Matthew Nuttal.

The Yellowjackets didn't go quietly in the second half.

Trying to remain unbeaten, Graceland peppered Wildcat goalie Jake Kittrell with shot after shot in the closing minutes. Kittrell made four saves in the final minutes, and six on the day, to record his second shutout of the season.

"Coach Thomas told us at practice that we had a chance to win," said Kittrell. "When the game ended it was surreal, almost like a movie ending. We were happy to get out of there with a victory."

The Wildcats, now 5-10 overall and 2-4 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, will host Avila University on Friday, October 19, at Ayers Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
