Powers named dean of student life

Wendy Powers has been named as the dean of student life. Previously, she was appointed associate dean for student success and first-year programming in summer 2007.

College President Dr. William L. Fox said he is very pleased with Powers' appointment. "Wendy was identified as a student life professional with the best qualifications for our deanship. It's a good day already for Culver-Stockton and, with Wendy's talent and commitment in our midst, there are many more good, even great days ahead of us," Fox said.

"We have been very pleased with Wendy's work on campus and her ability to establish supportive relationships with our students," added R. Joseph Dieker, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. "We know she will be able to lead her staff in continuing to strengthen student life programming so that it enriches our students' lives."

"I believe having a dean of student life with Wendy's skills and backgrounds strengthens our ongoing efforts to enhance our campus environment with additional services and activities designed to ensure student success, promote retention, and sustain graduation rates," said Melik Peter Khoury, vice president of enrollment management and college marketing.

Student Life is very busy preparing for next fall, Powers said. Currently, the department is working on the room draw for 2008-09, recruiting and selecting Wildcat Welcome guides, and first-year experience teaching assistants, and working on summer programming and staffing needs. The 2008-09 community assistant selection process will wrap up this week.

Powers is looking forward to concluding this year's inaugural Wildcat Leadership Institute with the third in a series of workshops and a student leadership banquet. The banquet will be Sunday, April 27, on campus to recognize all student leaders.

"We are assessing what we do in Student Life and planning for improvements as we look toward the future," said Powers.

"One of the things we're quite excited about is the creation of a Student Activities & Organizations Center in Johnson Hall that will provide community space, a work room, resource library, and mailboxes for student organizations," added Powers.

When Powers is not working, she enjoys walking her dog Wrigley, going to movies, and spending time with her nieces and nephew.

"I am really excited about the possibilities, and I'm committed to working with students and the Student Life team to continue strengthening campus life," Powers said.

Online registration for fall classes begins after Spring Break

C-SC will introduce online registration for next semester's classes when students return from spring break. Students are encouraged to contact their academic advisor to set up an advising appointment for the week of March 31-April 4. All students will need to see their advisor to be prepared to register online when registration week begins.

Don't forget to give your advisor the Golden Ticket, which you received in your tuition letter, that entitles you to a $3,000 EXP@CSC curriculum award for the 2008-09 academic year.

Online priority registration for seniors begins at 11:59 p.m. Sunday, April 6. Juniors may begin registering at noon on Tuesday, April 8. Online registration for sophomores opens at 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, April 9. Students who have not yet obtained sophomore status may begin registering at noon on Friday, April 11.

An academic advising fair, open to all students who have not already met with their advisor, will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in Meaders Lounge in the Gladys Crown Center. Faculty advisors will be on hand to work with students and to complete the online registration process for fall classes.

As part of Golden Ticket Week, April 7-11, students will be eligible for a grand prize drawing of a portable GPS unit, sponsored by the Office of Enrollment Management and College Marketing. Here's how it works. Of those seniors who complete their registration on their priority day, 25 names will be drawn; 25 juniors will be added after their day; and then 25 sophomores. Fifty more names will be added to the pool from those students who register during the April 10 academic advising fair. One name will be drawn from those 125 eligible students to receive the GPS unit. The others will all receive a consolation prize.

Students check out C-SC's Career/Internship Fair

Culver-Stockton's Career/Internship Fair was held recently and included many different organizations that allowed students to identify possible opportunities for internships or jobs.

The fair tries to provide
networking opportunities for showcasing our outstanding students to employers searching for exceptional employees and interns.

"Students should aggressively and persistently pursue all avenues
for their employment search and consider all possibilities.
Remember the only limitations are the ones we put on ourselves,"
said Janice Pillay, coordinator, career services/internships.

There will be a workshop this spring for juniors called "Get Ready for Grad School" led by current seniors.

Pillay is available for resume writing and interview tips. Contact Pillay at x6536 or jpillay@culver.edu.
