C-SC alum leaves $171,000 for scholarship use
Culver-Stockton College President Richard Valentine was presented with a check from Attorney Dennis Smith this week in the amount of $171,000 from the estate of Mrs. Ann A. (Steffen) Winkelman, class of 1933. The gift has been designated for student scholarships and added to The Charles and Ann Winkelman Endowed Scholarship, which Ann established during her lifetime. The Charles and Ann Winkelman Endowed Scholarship was originally established to memorialize her husband, Charles. Winkelman, who passed away January 10, 2008, was a teacher in Steffenville, Mo., and La Belle, Mo., schools prior to marriage. She was a member of the Canton Christian Church and a strong supporter of C-SC. "Ann cared deeply about her alma mater in many ways, and in particular, enjoyed the opportunity to help a new generation of students by supporting the scholarship program at Culver-Stockton College," said Eric Barkley, director of advancement and alumni programs. "This tremendous gift will impact our students greatly and will further Ann's wonderful legacy on the Hill. Our community of learning is most grateful." "This generosity is a true reflection of Ann's character and spirit," added President Valentine. "These scholarships will open many doors and opportunities for our students. What a wonderful way to be remembered. We are extremely appreciative of Ann's support."
Culver-Stockton adds WeatherBug Weather Monitoring Station to recourses
Culver- Stockton College is now able to receive data used by weather forecasters, broadcast meteorologists, government agencies, and educational institutions across North America through their WeatherBug weather monitoring station. The station is mounted on the roof of the campus Science Center and continuously monitors 27 different weather parameters that input to a network of 8,000 other similar devices. It is also made available to the WeatherBug weather widgets that run on personal computers and cell phones.The station includes a sensor that measures weather parameters such as temperature, relative humidity, heat index, barometric pressure, and dew point; a rain gauge that records hourly, daily, monthly and yearly rain measurements; and an anemometer assembly that reports current wind speed and direction, average wind speed, and maximum gusts. Dr. Robert Sadler, professor of physical sciences in the division of natural & mathematical sciences, is the driving force in the acquisition of the weather station. "The station will serve as a data warehouse for Culver-Stockton's atmospheric science and related Natural & Mathematical Science courses," said Sadler. "It will also be a resource for science classes in local public schools." Full story is available online.
C-SC Students watch alum preside in moot court demonstration
CANTON, Mo. - Several Culver-Stockton College students recently participated in a moot court demonstration via internet in the newly constructed mock trial courtroom on the C-SC campus. This opportunity was made possible through Culver-Stockton President, Richard Valentine and a fellow C-SC 1970 graduate, P. Scott Neville, Jr., who is an Illinois appellate court justice.The moot trial demonstration was held at Kennedy King College in Chicago as a part of their Black History Month celebration. The moot court demonstration was based on the murder case of People v. Wead, a murder case that Justice Neville previously ruled on. Justice Neville, along with two of his fellow justices made up the panel of judges who heard two University of Chicago Law students argue their case. C-SC students prepared for the trial demonstration by reading Justice Neville's opinion prior to participating in the event. Full story is available online.
C-SC to introduce Senior Days
Culver-Stockton will begin to celebrate a new tradition this year, Senior Days. Senior Days will be celebrated during the three days between the end of the semester and commencement, Wednesday, May 12 through Friday, May 14. Many activities will take place, both academic and social. Volunteers to help during the event and ideas for activities are welcome. C-SC Logo Shop renamed
The Culver-Stockton College Logo Shop has been changed to the "One Stop Culver Shop," as voted on by students. The shop sells many different types of Culver clothing as well as school supplies, batteries, sundries (Tylenol, carmex, etc.), envelopes, stamps, and more. Current sales in the logo shop include 30 percent off Nike warm-ups, 25 percent off jackets, 25 percent off sweatpants, 30 percent off school supplies and T-shirts for $10. Art professor to show solo exhibit in Keokuk
Robert Kennon, associate professor of art and design, will be exhibiting his solo show "Monumental Mysteries" at the Keokuk Art Center form February 1-27, 2010. The show consists of 13 prints combining copper engraving and zinc etching based on monoliths, megaliths, menhirs and dolmens taken from research done on his trip to Britain.
Psychology Club elects new officers
The C-SC Psychology Club elected new officers recently. Angelyna Hinkle, senior psychology major from Murrieta, Calif., was elected as president; Jenn Jackson, senior psychology major from Warrenburg, Mo., as vice president; Airen Ferguson, senior psychology major from New London, Mo., as treasurer; Elyssa Nordyke, junior psychology major from Hannibal, Mo., as secretary; and Karrie Perry, senior psychology and criminal justice major from Bowen, Ill., as the SGA representative.
Psi Chi officers named
Newly elected officers in Psi Chi include, Danielle Wilson, junior psychology major from Bethalto, Ill., as president; ElyssaNordye, junior psychology major from Hannibal, Mo., as vice president; Heather Hennicke, junior psychology major from Barnhart, Mo., as secretary; and Karrie Perry, senior psychology and criminal justice major from Bowen, Ill., as treasurer.
Seven New Members Inducted into Sigma Tau Delta
Seven new members were inducted into the Epsilon Iota chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society, on Tuesday, January 26. The new members include Whitney Gibler, senior English major from Foley, Mo.; Angelyna Hinkle, senior psychology major from Murrieta, Calif.; Erin McAvoy, junior English education major from Bluffton, Ind.; Emily Pierce, senior English major from Aubrey Texas; Amber Roach, senior psychology major from New London, Mo.; Ellie Shoemyer, junior English education major from Monroe City, Mo.; and Megan Wellman, senior English major from Quincy, Ill. Dr. Ron Stormer, the faculty advisor, welcomed the guests and introduced the keynote speaker, Holly (Reiter) Luetkenhaus, class of 2007.
