Dr. El-Bermawy teaches students during chemistry class.

Chemistry majors will learn not only balancing equations, molecular formulas, stoichiometry, redox reactions, organic reactions and mechanisms, spectroscopy, energy and the topics in chemistry, but they will also learn critical thinking, problem solving and how chemistry is connected to everything in the universe. Students will learn the various topics in general chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry and how to apply these topics to solve research problems. The core courses provide a solid foundation for chemistry majors who plan to work in industrial manufacturing and research, graduate work leading to an advanced degree and further study in professional programs.

What makes the program distinctive?

Chemistry majors will take core chemistry courses to help them advance in different areas of chemistry. They have to do an internship, conduct a research project and present their research. They tour local companies to get hands on experience and have the option of travelling internationally as well as domestically.

Beyond the Classroom

Visits to Companies
Experts in Classrooms
Study Abroad

After C-SC

Graduates with a chemistry major will be able to work as analytical chemists, research chemists, chemical and pharmaceutical researchers, pollution and environmental scientists, food and agricultural chemists, teachers and quality control chemists and many other chemistry-related careers. Graduates can also continue on to graduate or professional schools.

“The chemistry field has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and has helped me progress towards my goals of becoming a physician. The professors are always willing to help if I have trouble understanding. Out of the many chemistry classes offered, biochemistry was particularly interesting. Discovering the complex chemical processes that result in the basic actions undertaken by the cell was an incredible experience.”
