CANTON, Mo. – Andy Walsh, a professor of religion and philosophy, is the recipient of the Helsabeck Prize for Excellence in Teaching at Culver-Stockton College. He was recognized during the Honors Day Convocation in the Alexander Campbell Auditorium on May 7.

Lauren Schellenberger, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the College, said after giving Walsh the award, “You have embraced the experiential philosophy of Culver-Stockton College’s curriculum by taking hundreds of students to St. Louis for your ‘Religion in America’ class. Students have said it is an eye-opening, if not life-changing, experience. Classes in religion often elicit different reactions from people with opposing religious backgrounds, but you always have welcomed different viewpoints, showing fairness while encouraging students to challenge you.”

Walsh joined the Culver-Stockton faculty in 2001, and he serves as the chair of the department of religion. He previously taught at Indiana University in Indianapolis.

Walsh earned his doctorate in 1994 from Drew University in Madison, N.J., and his master’s degree in philosophy in 1992 from Drew. He received his master’s degree in theological studies in 1990 from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., and his bachelor’s degree in 1992 from North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

Walsh has received several awards for his teaching, including the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Missouri Department of Higher Education in 2014 and the T.A. Abbott Award for Faculty Excellence from the Higher Education and Leadership Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 2014. He also is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the American Political Science Association and the Society of Christian Ethics.
