Genomics Research Institute Discovering Biological Diversity

Unique Opportunity

You will embark on a full academic year of foundational biological research with support from a Science Education Alliance grant through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. This program provides you a unique opportunity to embrace the C-SC culture of collaborative and experiential coursework through this hands-on, research-intensive course series in the genomics of bacteriophages.

Lab Scientific Experiments

The program offers students with no prior research experience an opportunity to conduct scientific experiments in a laboratory setting while also collaborating with, and contributing to, a national alliance that sources data from multiple laboratories across the United States and internationally.

Information on Enrollment in Genomics Research

Biological Research Experience

As you work as part of a team with C-SC faculty and other members of the Science Education Alliance, you will gain valuable research experience and insights into the next frontier in biological research. You will become a part of the broader international scientific community. Over the two semesters you will:

  • Isolate viruses that infect bacteria from local soil
  • Prepare the virus DNA for sequencing
  • Annotate and compare the sequenced genome
  • Collaborate with other institutions in the SEA network

Genomics Research afforded me a unique opportunity within my first year at Culver-Stockton College to learn valuable lab techniques while applying the material I was learning, and I eventually traveled to present our findings at a collaborative genomics conference!
