Culver-Stockton College is continuing their tradition of service learning with their incoming students in the 9th annual Extreme Dome Makeover (EDM) planned for Saturday, August 19, 2017. The event begins at 10 a.m., with nearly 350 volunteers who will follow a police escort from the C-SC campus, down the concourse, to nearly 20 community improvement sites in the Canton, Mo. area.
The projects planned for the Extreme Dome Makeover 2017 include both private and public locations. While at the sites, the students will help landscape areas, paint, wash windows, plant trees and other general cleaning and upkeep projects.
Service learning is just one of the many ways Culver-Stockton College implements experiential learning into its unique curriculum and 12-week/3-week academic calendar. Participating in Extreme Dome Makeover is required for all new incoming students as a part of the First-Year-Experience course although all students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to volunteer. This event has been highly effective at integrating students into the Canton community. The purpose of Extreme Dome Makeover, one of several service-learning experiences throughout a student’s time on “the Hill,” is to help C-SC students build relationships with one another and with the community members they meet during the event. It also helps students see the community in a new way and shows the impact that just a few hours of their time in service can make.
Projects from past years include improving senior housing, pathway construction by the Mississippi River, siding homes, up-keep projects for the City of Canton, assisting in constructing wheelchair ramps and volunteering with projects at dozens of private residences.
“Extreme Dome Makeover gives the College a chance to give back to the city of Canton, the community that supports us, while giving our students the opportunity to participate in service learning, which is a key component of their education at Culver-Stockton College,” proudly states Amanda Sorenson, chaplain of C-SC.
