C-SC Welcomes New Faculty to "the Hill"

Culver-Stockton College welcomes five new faculty members to “the Hill” this fall. The Division of Applied, Liberal Arts and Sciences welcomes three of them. Alexa Schut is joining the faculty as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Mathematics. May of 2017, Mrs. Schut graduated with a Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Wisconsin while teaching part time at the university in their lower level mathematics classes. Her undergraduate degree comes from Trinity Christian College, where she majored in Mathematics, minored in Educational studies, and minored in English Literature. Alexa is excited to teach many different levels of mathematics here at Culver-Stockton College and to work with the unique student body that makes up the campus. She currently has two publications out. The first is on connecting Mathematics and Young Adult Adventure Literature (specifically the Harry Potter series) and is published through the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. The second focuses on using computer simulations in an Introductory Statistics course and is published through the UWM library as a Master’s thesis. When she is not teaching, she enjoys spending time hiking, reading, and camping with her husband.

Dr. Brad Logsdon, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, earned his B.S. in Chemistry at Eastern Illinois University with minors in Mathematics, Physics, and Spanish. He earned his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Iowa State University. He has most recently served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Springfield. He has also taught chemistry at universities in Central Asia and the Middle East. Brad has also published articles in the Journal of Chemical Education and multiple chemistry journals. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening and travel.

Dr. Angel Knoverek, Assistant Professor of Psychology, received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and a M.S. in Clinical Psychology. She earned a BS in Psychology and BA in English from Culver-Stockton College in 1993. Since that time she has worked in community mental health agencies in Chicago and Quincy, Ill., working with youth in various settings, including residential treatment centers, group homes, foster care, therapeutic day schools and outpatient counseling. She served in a variety of administrator roles and also served as the Project Director for a member site of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. Angel is also a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) in the State of Illinois and is an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS). She has co-authored multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored a book chapter soon to be published. In her free time, Angel enjoys spending time with her husband, Russell, and their three children, preferably at the lake boating, tubing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. She also enjoys reading.

The Division of Business, Education, and Law welcomes a new face to their faculty. Joy Alexander will join the C-SC faculty in the fall 2017 semester as an Assistant Professor of Business focusing on healthcare management. She will teach courses in healthcare and economics for the College.

Alexander received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology, and a Master of Social Work degree from University of Iowa and completed her Doctorate in Business Administration with a specialization in leadership from Capella University in Minneapolis, Minn. In addition to teaching psychology and social work courses for three universities, Alexander’s twenty-five-year business career has spanned healthcare administration and agricultural business specialties. Alexander has also served on numerous committees for community health, business development and school improvement.

The Fine, Applied, and Literary Arts Division welcomes Joe Skertich, Assistant Professor of Music. Mr. Skertich earned his MFA in Music Composition for the Screen at Columbia College Chicago in 2011. Since that time, he has worked as a freelance composer and music professional in Los Angeles, the Pacific Northwest and Chicago. He has written primarily for commercial and corporate projects, most notably for Microsoft, Toyota, Tesla and Apple. Additionally, Joe has worked as an Artist Liaison for several large commercial music events countrywide.  In this role he was a point person between production teams, event crew and high profile artists across many styles of popular music. Mr. Skertich has taught in diverse settings, from individual piano and music technology instruction to corporate training, and is excited to combine his passion for music and teaching in his role at Culver-Stockton College. In his free time Joe loves to travel, spend time outdoors, and hike in the mountains.
