C-SC Continues to Enhance Campus Throughout Summer

Progress continues on “the Hill” at Culver-Stockton College as it sees many updates, upgrades and additions to the campus while the students are on summer break. “It’s been a challenge and a privilege to be part of College history, and to be able to contribute to the growth of the College,” says Mike Bringer ’93, Director of Safety and Facilities. Bringer has been the lead on all of the projects running concurrently for the past several months.

The enhancements and updates to several locations on campus include residential updates, structural updates and outdoor updates; all with a goal of being completed around the start of the fall 2017 semester.

Many of C-SC residential halls were updated and enhanced. Shannon Hall, one of C-SC’s first-year student residential halls, is in the process of receiving nearly a half million dollar upgrade to the facility. Those enhancements include new windows, new bathrooms, new LED lighting, as well as new drywall and paint throughout the building. Weldon Hall received new bathrooms and new paint to the exterior. Gerlach Hall had tile and carpet installed, Clough Hall is getting a new kitchen area. A new roof was installed on Stone Hall, C-SC’s premier upperclassmen residential hall, which was completely overhauled and was rededicated in 2013.

There were several academic buildings that also received upgrades and enhancements. The Carl Johann Memorial Library building received new windows; Herrick Center, which houses the Mabee Art Gallery and the business academic division, obtained new wall finish, flooring, lighting and paint in the front entrance or commons area.

The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Recreation & Wellness Center, which opened in February of 2016, had several updates including fresh coats of paint, vanities in the bathrooms and installing resinous flooring in the restrooms and stairwells. The racquetball court in the Joe Charles Field House was converted to a football locker room to accommodate student athletes for the upcoming season.

There are also enhancements happening throughout the external portion of the buildings on campus. The Charlann Schwan Parkway is getting additional upgrades, including an archway at the main entrance of the campus. This project is funded by Joe Schwan ’57, in memory of his wife, Charlann. The College’s main entrance, located by the Ayerco Truck & Travel Plaza, was dedicated in 2014. There is also new landscaping added south of Johnson Hall, an upperclassman residential hall, as well as around the Robert W. Brown Performing Arts Center.

The College is also in process of installing new seating at Ellison Poulton Stadium at NX Level Field. The seats were originally from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., and were installed in 2003. The project is expected to be completed by the first home football game.

The largest project of the summer on “the Hill” is the Carolyn L. and Robert W. Brown Residence Hall, which is slated to open for residents in the fall semester. The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation has issued a $400,000 project completion challenge grant to raise funds for project. The C-SC community is challenged to raise the funds by April of 2018. Much progress has been made in fundraising for this initiative.

The residence hall is a suite-style arrangement, each suite will have two rooms with four beds. Rooms will have general seating, a kitchenette, private bathrooms and built-in closets. In addition, the building will be equipped with four state-of-the-art classrooms in one wing.

Dr. Kelly M.
