WORDS Mean Something
Do you enjoy reading and writing in a variety of genres? Our English major is designed to provide you with a solid foundation in a wide range of diverse literature, literary analysis, critical interpretation and creative expression. You will complete courses in American and British literature, creative writing and specialized seminars like Multicultural Literature, Gender in Literature and History of the English Language. Major Author and Period Study seminar courses are regularly offered. Recent offerings have included Major Authors courses on Stephen King and Toni Morrison, and Period Studies courses on Modernism and Victorian Gothic.

Our faculty have diverse areas of expertise, from Old English to popular culture, and would be thrilled to work with you on any area of literary studies that is of interest to you! Take advantage of the great opportunities to double major by pairing your English degree with Psychology, Business, Criminal Justice or Theatre and Communication.
Studying English at Culver-Stockton gave me a lot of insight into the development of culture and developed in me an ability to think critically about literature and the world at large. Pursuing this degree allowed me to explore the English and literary traditions, and enhanced the role of critical perspective in any situation. It has also intensified my pleasure in the enjoyment of reading!

Information About Our Minors
English majors can also minor in creative writing, which includes an introductory course; seminar-style courses in fiction, poetry and playwriting; and work on Harmony, the campus literary magazine.
Non-English majors can minor in English, which provides an opportunity to pursue your interests and specialization in a variety of courses.
