CANTON, Mo. – A plein air painting workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 3 on the Culver-Stockton College campus.

The students will meet at the Herrick Foundation Center, but the artwork will be done outdoors during the event. The cost is $40, and participants may use watercolor, acrylic or oils. The focus will be composition, developing the image and visualizing what to paint. A course outline, a list of materials and instructions will be sent to people who register.

The workshop will be directed by Richard Dutton, a life-long artist and educator. Dutton taught art at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa for more than 30 years and served as chair of the Performing and Visual Arts division. He retired from college teaching in 1999, and he is an active and accomplished plein air painter now living in Hallsville, Mo.

Dutton will teach the workshop on May 3 and then help judge the River Bluffs Paint Out event on May 4 in Canton.
